Love stuff like this, especially any footage of London from the late 70s and 80s. Makes me all nostalgic about my childhood. London feels like a different place now.

If you like this stuff then you’ll probably be interested in A Portrait of Queenie about Queenie Watts when she ran the Iron Bridge Tavern in Poplar.

Well worth 40 minutes.

Back in the days when you wore a SUIT on a Friday and Saturday night down the pub.

Poignant footage of a post war East End just on the cusp of huge change.

If you look at all that old footage, it really is like about 80% of working class men walked round with a fag permanently in their mouth, up until about 1970

The bloke sitting at the front of the boat wearing the white panama has the best job in the history of the world.

Basking in the sun and smoking a fag while watching the world go by.

Agreed the Regents canal one is wonderful. It goes by where my dad was born, and being filmed the year he was born makes it even better. My uncles, his elder brothers regularly swam in the canal in the 1920's.

Seeing places you know well, 100+ years ago in a photo, is one thing. But on video, colourised, with people moving around etc is something different.

Thanks MiM, wonderful stuff.

I suspect the answer to your question is that, 'industrial history' or 'industrial archaeology' sounds as dry as pig iron. Whereas, as that video shows, it's actually fascinating stuff.

John Constable knew this very well.

Here's some footage from the canals in 1924

Including round Stepney/Mile End.

Absolutely fascinating stuff, baffles me how anyone isn't into this

It is also clear that parking in the street was easy; spaces everywhere.

Even the zebra crossing looked classy in that film.

Re: 1959 dash cam ride through London- colourised and 60fps
I really like the first 5 minutes of this film. It's the Kensington High Street area in the early 50's.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEjxGIka7uU

Lovely clean streets, not covered in markings, yellow lines, repaired patches, etc, and the people look so elegant. I suppose they are nearly all dead now. The cars are stunning.

Nice that the van driver who gets annoyed at being filmed has UPU on his number plate.

Somewhere there is a version of this with Debussy's Clair de Lune as the soundtrack, which fits the mood perfectly ,better than this silent version.

Fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting.
Sad that some posters on here need to turn it into a racist jibe. Wonderful historical document.

We were going to have our Christmas 'do' in the Dog & Duck again this year. Thursday 17th Dec. Can't see it happening. Shame.

Enjoyed that, thanks
Might be colourised but looks like the main colour of 1950's London was still grey
Not a petrol head at all but loved the cars
